How did you choose your domain name?

I have a question for you, how did you choose your website’s domain name?

If you’ll ask me about my domain name, I never thought that I would own a site. This website was a gift from my former boss. One day while we were eating out (him and his wife invited me to eat out) and we were talking about our blog sites, he just popped the question that if I would have a website, what would be the name.

Out of nowhere ( I have no clue whatsoever on what will happen next) and I thought of it as a joke, I said I want the world to know my name so I want it to be my full name. He smiled to me and said “are you serious?”. I replied “Yeah. Positive.”

When we get back to the office he then told me that he purchased a domain for me and it’ll be ready after 24 hours. And I said to myself “OMG!@#!!”. I can’t believe it myself. Those were the times when buying your own domain was ‘expensive’ not to mention the hosting and I can’t afford it. And it was really a special gift for me and I valued and appreciate it so much -thanks again boss.

SO that’s how this blog started. But anyway, with regards on picking up a domain name. I don’t really encourage you to buy a domain name with your name, I mean look at those famous sites (yahoo, google, msn, wikipedia and etc) , these websites was able to build their name without using any of the owner or CEO’s name on it.

I think, the shorter, the better. Short because it’s easier to memorize and good for your first time visitors. Plus hey, only those people who are close to me or people who know me will have the will or want to search Gladys Muana, others don’t. Unless (probably) if I can leave footprints/ignite your curiosity/be controversial and etc then you will scan the web about me ~lol. But reality check, I’m just an ordinary person who’s like you, shouting my world in my own word and even if I know I have lots of friends, let’s face it..not all of my friends are into ‘blogging’.

Also, I clearly understand keywords play a big role/good part in terms of getting a good position on any search engine. But the thing is, do you have those keywords? Do you know SEO? Good if you do but ‘not so good’ if you don’t.

it’s so chaotic in the blogosphere right now and getting at least 200+ unique visitors or maybe 200+ hits per day is a good start. that is why, opt for a shorter and easy to memorize domain name and start your way from that. Your domain name needs to coincide with your topic too, or if not, you can create a sub-title showing what your blog is all about.

Just my 2 cents :-)

  1. I’ve read your entry again, Glads. Very informative and inspirational. Indeed, choosing the right site name is one difficult. It’ll usually take few minutes of thinking before I can come up with something. I always make sure it will be something original and embracing my whole ideas just what I am about to write the whole year through. hehehe. Regardless, it should be something you will be comfortable the whole time. And, best describes your thinking and that of your audiences or readers. :D
